River & Swimming Safety

As the days get sunnier and the temptation to take a dip grows, we want to remind everyone that the river may look inviting, but it’s not yet safe for swimming. The currents can be strong, and the water temperature is still chilly, which can be dangerous.

Please, let’s keep our community safe by staying out of the river for now.

Thank you to SYRCL – The South Yuba River Citizens League for sharing this important safety information, in lieu of the unfortunate recent drownings this summer.

“When you’re out enjoying the Yuba River, it’s essential to understand how the water behaves around rocks. As water flows over rocks, a depression is created directly behind it. This depression can be what is known as a recirculating hole.
As the water moves, it resurfaces in different ways: some flows back upstream to fill the void, some continues downstream slower than the main current, and, in between, there’s a neutral zone called the “boil.”
These recirculating holes can be DEADLY.
It is never safe to swim near boulders that have water flowing over them as you can be pinned or sucked under water because of recirculating holes.
As rivers are a dynamic natural environment, rocks will shift and move every winter. Never assume that the river remains the same. What was a safe place to swim last year may not be so this year.
Pay attention. Always look and check before you leap.”

The Opioid Resource Kit is being developed by the CAPCs of multiple counties and is hosted on the Sacramento CAP Center’s web site. It is aimed at helping agencies and other organizations find resources for use in their work, rather than being designed for the general public.
