Nearly 21% of adults in the U.S., over 50 million Americans, have experienced a mental illness1. Implementing evidence-based mental health communications in our communities is more crucial than ever. To help connect San Diegans with mental health support services, the San Diego Health & Human Services Agency (HHSA) worked with Rescue Agency.
In our research, we found that many adults avoid seeking support for their mental health challenges because they believe they can or should handle their struggles alone. Cultural messages pushing “self-care” tips often perpetuate this belief that people should fix feelings of depression and anxiety on their own.
Unfortunately, this ideal of self-care can increase feelings of isolation and anxiety. Our new ad Overloaded counters these messages by emphasizing the importance of seeking external support and accessing professional resources to get help coping with mental health challenges.
