Event Description: Generations of indigenous people have lived in landscapes across California since time immemorial; today some of those spaces are within State Parks. At the South Yuba River State Park in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, the Nisenan have an ancient connection to this landscape that stretches generations further back than the Gold Rush, and far deeper than the gold pans which scratched the surface of its riverbanks.

This Native American Heritage Month we want to honor the Nisenan and highlight the struggle that they still face to this day to be recognized and respected in their homeland. At the South Yuba River SP we are excited to have the opportunity to interview the Nevada City Nisenan Tribal Spokesperson, Shelly Covert, and hear about the connection of the Nisenan people to their ancestral lands which include the river that flows through this State Park. Join our live interview on the California State Parks PORTS Facebook page on Wednesday November 17th at 10:30am PST, and for more information about the Nisenan, visit https://www.nisenan.org/
