Hello Community Partners,
Thank you to those who were able to join us for our Community Support Network meeting on June 1st. We had an amazing conversation about father- and parent engagement in our programs. We kicked off the conversation by hearing from Justin Margolis, Project Manager with the Coalition for Victims of Child Abuse. Justin shared some insights based on his own experience as a single father with a background in both the juvenile and adult justice systems. Justin has also worked the majority of his career engaging fathers in services that will benefit their own parenting journey and their relationship with their children. We concluded the conversation with a presentation from Shona Torgrimson-Duncan with our local Helping Hands Nurturing Center and learned about an exciting program they’re getting ready to start specifically working with fathers in Nevada County. And finally, we spent some time brainstorming ways to improve parent engagement within our organizations.
Below are a few links that Justin felt would be beneficial to the fathers that we serve (plus a nice, lighthearted video depicting what it would look like if moms were treated like dads – which challenges us to make sure we view dads as an equal partner in parenting, rather than assuming mom is the “default parent”:
