Nevada County Named Stepping Up Innovator County

Nevada County was named as one of a select group of Stepping Up Innovator Counties in the United States for its expertise in data-driven efforts to keep people with mental illness out of jail and connected to treatment.

Since the Stepping Up initiative was launched in May 2015, more than 500 counties in 43 states, representing 40 percent of the U.S. population, have committed to the Stepping Up goal.

“The partnerships we have here are really phenomenal and why we were nominated as an Innovator County,” said Nevada County Behavioral Health Director Phebe Bell. “We’re always looking at trends on how we can improve outcomes for our residents, but we can’t do it alone. The complexity and intentionality to chip away at our shared goal are what have made this initiative successful over the last seven years.”

Nevada County Probations Take Back the Cookies

Nevada County Probations – Take back the Cookies.

We are aware of the rumors circulating in this community that someone in our Department is “dealing.” The substances could be considered illicit, addictive, and can’t-have-just-one, type of substances. Some of the common street names are “Thin Mints”, “Lemonades”, “Carmel De-lights” and “Adventurefuls.”

Please, if you are tempted or swayed by the cute lil’ girls pushing these and the cute lil’ names of these substances AND happen to have purchased too many boxes, we will be running a “take back the cookies” event in our lobby Monday through Friday 8-5 where you will find a “disposal bin.” #copslovedonuts #probationofficerslovecookies #heretohelp #newyearnewus

The Ranch House: Closing Gaps in Housing Services

The Nevada County Board of Supervisors had foresight when they prioritized access to affordable housing in 2018. Since that time, the housing crisis in California has accelerated, as has the cost of development. California is currently the second most expensive place to live in the nation after Hawaii. The Board’s early action precipitated a wave of forward-thinking efforts and innovative solutions. Since 2018, there have been numerous projects initiated across Nevada County, representing a spectrum of housing types from supportive housing to general affordable housing. After years of effort, many of these projects are starting to come online, including Brunswick Commons in Grass Valley, Lone Oak Senior Apartments in Penn Valley, and Cashin’s Field in Nevada City. These projects have a tangible benefit, but it is still not enough, and more must be done across the spectrum.

The Ranch House project is a great example of an innovative project that addresses an important gap in the current array of housing services: supportive housing for people who are stable enough to live with relative independence but will thrive best in an independent unit, as opposed to living with roommates.
