DNA Meets LED in Chromosomatic Exhibit at Madelyn Helling Library

Chromosomatic is a sculpture by artist Rachel Rein consisting of 23 translucent lanterns representing the 23 pairs of chromosomes comprising human DNA. Each lantern houses individually addressable LED lights. A custom Python script translates Rein’s DNA research data into bands of light. Each time Chromosomatic pulses on, it shows a representation of the DNA shared between the artist’s mother and someone in the world who was curious enough to take a DNA test and open enough to consent to matching with other people.

The Affordable Connectivity Program

Subsidized Internet: The Affordable Connectivity Program

The federally-funded Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) provides eligible households with a $30 monthly discount on home internet plans. Find out if you are eligible here and more information to apply here. Households can also call (888) 920-2762 to apply. The call center will walk individuals through the process and get them enrolled in approximately 10 minutes.

Only 13% of eligible Nevada County households have enrolled in the program.  The Sierra Business Council (SBC) received a grant from the California Public Utilities Commission to expand broadband deployment and to close barriers to digital equity. ILG Sustainability Webinar

Climate action is key to more a sustainable and resilient future. But lots of cities, counties and special districts are stretched thin with competing priorities and limited capacity. To address local agencies’ evolving needs, ILG developed the Beacon Program to provide positive recognition, resources, and best practices for cities, counties, and special districts of all sizes. On this webinar, participants will hear from recent Beacon Award winners about how different types of agencies of various sizes have implemented innovative and equitable sustainability projects, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and moved the needle toward a more sustainable California. We’ll also share more information about the Beacon Program and how your agency can participate, get tips and tools and receive the recognition you deserve!

Speakers include:

  • Katie Bailey, Management Analyst II, City of Rancho Cucamonga
  • Ryan Lau, External Affairs Representative, Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District
  • Erica Mertens, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Program Manager, Town of Truckee

Local Coalition Launches Know Overdose Nevada County Campaign

A multi-sector, broad-based coalition of more than 20 local organizations, businesses, and institutions has launched the Know Overdose Nevada County campaign to increase knowledge and awareness about drug overdose risks and harm reduction strategies to prevent overdoses and deaths.

Like many other communities across the state and country, Nevada County has seen an increase in overdose deaths in the past few years. This has largely been a result of synthetic opioids, particularly fentanyl, entering the local drug supply.

The diversity of Know Overdose Nevada County’s coalition members, which includes local businesses, education institutions, health care providers and non-profits, reflects the urgent need for a community-based harm reduction approach to increase community awareness and prevent overdose deaths.
