CAP Month 2023- Thank you
Thank you so much to all of our wonderful donors. The month was filled with amazing events and examples of community members and service providers who are dedicated to the ongoing prevention of child abuse and neglect. On April 8th, we had a wonderful first Community Barbecue for Child Abuse Prevention month. Jim from Nevada County Free Range Beef grilled his delicious burgers and the Bikers Against Child Abuse grilled hotdogs donated by the Northridge. With donations from so many valued community partners, we were able to have a fantastic day and serve over 200 community members and children. On April 11, we were able to partner with Golden Empire Nursing and Rehab Center and local families with young children to share in a day of crafts and joy. The Board of Supervisors passed a proclamation on April 18th declaring April as Child Abuse Prevention Month and received a presentation from the Child Abuse Prevention Council of Western Nevada County (CAPC) and the Nevada County Rapid Response Team. Finally, on April 25th, CAPC hosted a Healthy Outcomes from Positive Experiences (HOPE) training that was open to the public. Please see our Sponsors page for more information on the partners who donated time, money, and goods to make this month amazing.

Hospitality House Donation Match for May
Can you help us meet this match? GIVE TODAY>
Over our last fiscal year, Hospitality House has served 15% more people experiencing homelessness—jumping from 618 people to 718 in the span of one year,” said Nancy Baglietto, executive director of Hospitality House. “This equates to 100 more local men, women, children, seniors and veterans who are houseless and in urgent need of shelter and resources designed to help them return to homes of their own.Committed to providing pathways to housing, Hospitality House has been making strides to combat housing shortages and rising rents by opening Sierra Guest Home (pictured right) in 2021, a transitional housing complex for seniors and those living with disabilities, and by opening Brunswick Commons in 2022 with several partners, 40 units of permanent housing for families and individuals. In April of this year, Hospitality House formed a partnership with City of Grass Valley with the intent to build more subsidized housing through potential state funding and local donor support, with a goal to alleviate the working poor, older adults surviving on Social Security who are unable to work, struggling families who can’t compete with fair market rate rents, and so forth

Nevada County Environmental Health Announces 2023 Mosquito Fish Giveaway Days
Nevada County’s Environmental Health Department will host five Mosquito Fish Giveaways at the Eric Rood Center, all on Thursdays, beginning May 11th and going through July 6th.
“Mosquito fish consume a lot of insect larvae in ponds or other standing bodies of water,” explained Amy Irani, Environmental Health Director. “By reducing the mosquito population in larvae form, you can reduce the mosquito population and your risk of contracting mosquito-borne diseases, including the West Nile Virus. My team also wants to remind folks to check and remove standing water from pots, bins, buckets, and tires. We all play a role in reducing the risk of infection.”
Equity & Inclusion Leadership Alliance Announces Community Survey
Some things are a crime, and some things just aren’t right! Safe and Unified Nevada County (SUN) believes we can address both–and build a stronger community–by sharing our experiences, finding common ground, and providing meaningful support to those negatively impacted by hate crimes and hate incidents in our area.
SUN is a subcommittee of the Equity & Inclusion Leadership Alliance (EILA), which consists of representatives from the Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) Coalition, county and municipal departments, law enforcement, the judicial system, healthcare, faith-based groups, education, the arts, the social justice non-profit Color Me Human, and other vital organizations. It is a vibrant mix of leaders working to address the current needs of our community and plan for a brighter future.
In the spirit of Victims’ Rights Week, SUN is asking all Nevada County residents to share their insights in the 2023 SUN Survey to move forward in the spirit of candor and collaboration.

Historical Landmarks Commission Invites Public to Participate in National Marker Day
The Nevada County Historical Landmarks Commission invites residents to participate in this year’s National Marker Day on April 28th. This national event is designed to help clean and maintain the almost 200,000 historical markers believed to exist in the United States.
Nevada County has over 200 historical landmarks. The Historical Landmarks Commission is looking for volunteers to visit the markers in their neighborhood. There are many ways of locating the County’s markers; residents can visit the interactive map of the County’s landmarks or purchase an electronic or paperback copy of the book Exploring Nevada County, a guide to all the County’s landmarks.
