Stay Out, Stay Alive: Partners Come Together to Highlight River Safety
Local, state, and federal agencies and nonprofits came together this week at the South Yuba River to encourage residents and visitors to stay out of the river and stay alive. The event included a river rescue training by Nevada County Consolidated Fire District and California Highway Patrol.
Due to significant rain and melting snowpack, current high flows have already taken one life this year and are modeling similarly to high river flows in 2019, when multiple lives were lost in June alone due to visitors and locals recreating in dangerous river conditions.
Watch the video from YubaNet featuring District 4 Supervisor Sue Hoek and Chief Pat Sullivan from Nevada County Consolidated FD to learn more about river safety and current conditions.

The Center for Nonprofit Leadership in partnership with the Nevada County Fair, the County of Nevada and Connecting Point, is producing Nevada County’s Annual Community Volunteer & Job Fair at the Fairgrounds on Saturday, June 3rd.
Our community is rich with individuals and nonprofit organizations that enhance our lives every day with their commitment to help people connect, grow and thrive. The Passion in Action event will see dozens of local nonprofit and community impact organizations, including the Nevada County Fair, participating as ‘vendors’ of volunteer and job opportunities. These groups will be ready to share their needs and employment options with job seekers and volunteers as they seek to engage civically minded community members in their work.
This unique event will provide not only the opportunity, but the space, to encourage individuals with a passion, and the desire to put that passion into action, to find an organization that will provide the place to make that action a reality.
CALLING ALL NONPROFITS!
If you are interested in having a booth at the Volunteer & Job Fair, don’t miss out and sign up NOW! All of the organizations that are signed up by May 18 will be listed in ads in The Union on May 23 and 31. We’re also doing ads and OpEds on YubaNet, PSAs and interviews on KVMR and KNCO, and we have many big partners pushing the information to their employees and stakeholders (county, hospital, community groups, etc.). We’re really making a push for community attendance and also expect that the nicer weather will be a draw for attendees to come out this year!
Passion in Action is FREE to the public and promises to be a delightful afternoon of community and connection. Plus, food vendors will be on hand to offer visitors a snack or beverage as they explore the many community impact organizations.
