Child Poverty in California Dropped to a Historic Low in Fall 2021

California ranks 35th among U.S. states in overall child well-being, according to the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s latest KIDS COUNT Data Book. In addition to presenting national and state data across four domains—economic well-being, education, health, and family and community—this edition describes how the country’s lack of affordable and accessible child care negatively affects children, families, and U.S. businesses.
Nearly a Third Reporting Two or More Races Were Under 18 in 2020
The nation’s multiracial population was the youngest of any race group, according to a recent story by the U.S Census Bureau. Recently released 2020 Census data show that, among those who reported two or more races, 32.5% were under age 18.

Join this salon to hear from experts on our 2023 wildfire season risk and to learn more about the Tahoe Truckee COAD (Community Organizations Active in Disaster) that is led by local resident Anne Rarick. The recently formed COAD will provide structure for how local organizations will partner to help residents prepare, respond and recover from disasters.

Summer Learning runs from June 12th through August 11th this year. Stop by your local library branch to pick up a Summer Reading Log for kids and teens. All participants will receive a free book and bookmark.
Our 2023 theme, Find Your Voice, speaks to the power of expressing yourself, sharing stories, and sparking change. There will be events and workshops at all Nevada County Library locations, including Wild Things’ animal rescue program, instrument petting zoos with Music in the Mountains, Musical Mondays with InConcert Sierra, and much more.

Annual Backpack Drive Returns
Sierra Nevada Regional Department of Child Support Services , in collaboration with Bright Futures for Youth, is seeking donations of new backpacks and school supplies for children ages 5 to 17. The support of the community is imperative to the success of this drive. Please join us in our effort to help kids feel confident and ready to learn as they enter the 23-24 school year!
Take the Community Wildfire Protection Plan Survey
Now through August 31st, the Nevada County Office of Emergency Services is collecting resident feedback through the Community Wildfire Protection Plan Survey. All Nevada County residents are encouraged to take the survey. So far, nearly 700 folks have provided their insight on challenges related to wildfire, mitigation priorities, and evacuation concerns.
The survey is available in both English and Spanish and can be completed online or in-person. The Office of Emergency Services will be hitting the streets to connect with residents about wildfire and emergency preparedness at several events this summer. Come out and say hello and add your voice to the survey.
