Jinnae Anderson: The Play’s the thing

Here is Jinnae’s latest amazing article in the Union.  School’s back in session and that means it’s back to work for everyone, kids and adults included. Nose to the grindstone and all that, right? But wait! Before life gets too serious and scheduled and structured, let’s take a moment to talk about play.

Many of us consider play something we (or our kids) get to do when, and only when, all of the “important” things in life are completed. But consider this: All humans—in fact, all mammals—have a fundamental, inborn need for fun, lighthearted enjoyment and playful activities.

Building Hope from the Ground Up

Building Hope from the Ground Up

In the realm of human psychology, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a well-established framework that has helped us understand the stages of human development and fulfillment. The foundation of this pyramid of needs begins with essentials like food, shelter, and safety. It’s this very foundation that provides the stable ground upon which individuals can embark on journeys of healing, growth, and self-discovery.

Early Childhood Resources for the New Learning Year!

Kindergarten Sturdy Bridge Learning Community

The kindergarten year presents a crucial opportunity to build partnerships and trust with parents and families, and to work with them on nurturing habits and routines, including everyday attendance, for early school success. To support efforts for a transformational kindergarten year, ED released a Dear Colleague Letter launching a multistate community of practice: Kindergarten Sturdy Bridge Learning Community. State educational agencies and local educational agencies will have the opportunity to participate in peer learning, receive technical assistance, share and learn about best practices, and strengthen and build new collaborative networks to transform how students experience kindergarten. States can learn more about the learning community and indicate their interest in participating by completing an online form

Protecting Early Childhood Programs from Infection

Keeping early childhood settings clean reduces the risk of infection for children and educators. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has resources on hand hygiene and cleaning and disinfecting. A free online clean hands and spaces training is  available in English and Spanish. Additional resources are available on CDC’s early care and education portal.

The Importance of Health Literacy

Ensuring that people have access to and can understand health information is an important role of early childhood providers, programs, and organizations. Health and Human Services’ National Center on Health, Behavioral Health, and Safety developed a resource to support health literacy in early childhood programs.

New Mental Health Ad

Nearly 21% of adults in the U.S., over 50 million Americans, have experienced a mental illness1. Implementing evidence-based mental health communications in our communities is more crucial than ever. To help connect San Diegans with mental health support services, the San Diego Health & Human Services Agency (HHSA) worked with Rescue Agency.

In our research, we found that many adults avoid seeking support for their mental health challenges because they believe they can or should handle their struggles alone. Cultural messages pushing “self-care” tips often perpetuate this belief that people should fix feelings of depression and anxiety on their own.

Unfortunately, this ideal of self-care can increase feelings of isolation and anxiety. Our new ad Overloaded counters these messages by emphasizing the importance of seeking external support and accessing professional resources to get help coping with mental health challenges.
