The Board also approved the fire district chiefs’ request for up to $1 Million in temporary gap funding to operate Rough & Ready Fire Station #59 while the reorganization effort is underway. The Board vote assures continued fire protection for the Rough & Ready community as their fire station was slated to close permanently on June 30.

Wildfire Planning Efforts Ramp Up in Truckee

Long recognized as a tourist destination, Truckee faces unique challenges in wildfire prevention and mitigation efforts, including those posed by seasonal population fluctuations and heavy recreational use. On the heels of Measure T, Truckee Fire Protection District’s successful tax measure to dedicate local funding for wildfire prevention, several efforts are currently underway to ensure that projects and programs align with community priorities and needs.

Last July, the Nevada County Office of Emergency Services (OES) hired a County Wildfire Coordinator, a brand-new position charged with getting on the ground in communities across Nevada County to better understand what is working, what isn’t, and what is needed for our communities to be wildfire resilient.

How Much it Costs to Struggle: The Real Cost Measure in California 2023

August 22, 2023, 2:30 PM at Madelyn Helling Library

A new study released in June by United Ways of California reveals the “real cost” of living in California. Unlike the official poverty measure, the Real Cost Measure factors the costs of housing, food, health care, childcare and other basic needs for a much more accurate measure of what it takes to make ends meet in California.

At this free event, Henry Gascon, one of the authors of the study, will examine what the Real Cost Measure looks like throughout California, with a particular emphasis on Nevada and Sierra Counties, and discuss the challenges low-income households face every day to make ends meet.

Following the presentation, we will engage in a community conversation with local community leaders on what we can do individually and collectively to help families make ends meet.

The discussion panel will include Nancy Baglietto, Executive Director of Hospitality House; Nicole McNeely, Executive Director of Childrens Advocates of Nevada County; Phil Alonzo, Executive Director of Interfaith Food Ministry, and Toby Guevin, Program Manager from Nevada County Public Health Department.

Seating is limited. Register here to reserve your seat: Nevada County United Way – Real Cost Measure Presentation and Panel Discussion (networkforgood.com)

Jinnae Anderson: Helping Little Ones With Big Feelings

Raising a preschooler is kind of like helping a small boat to navigate through big, stormy seas. Waves of emotion can arise from nowhere or everywhere, intense and unbidden, sweeping your child up and away. We grownups can feel powerless to help them—but we’re not. In this article we’ll explore what’s going on for our littles emotionally, and how we can equip them with a lifejacket to better stay afloat when those explosive feelings appear.

First, let’s take a peek into your preschooler’s head; there’s a lot going on in there! A preschooler’s brain is twice as busy as a college student’s brain and three times busier than the average adult’s. The young brain is a fascinating, dynamic work-in-progress whose main focus is in developing the cerebral cortex, the part that handles language, attention, impulse control, reasoning, and problem solving.
