Twelve Young Women – 2025 Graduates

Twelve young women – each with their own background and experiences – will graduate soon from local high schools and The Friendship Club, an after-school program that is part of Bright Futures for Youth.

The Friendship Club will celebrate and honor the young women during the 24th annual Graduation Gala at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, at The Center for the Arts in Grass Valley.

The Friendship Club provides academic, emotional and social support to sixth- through 12th-grade girls and young women in Nevada County. About 80 students were enrolled in the program during the 2024-25 school year.

The after-school program has a far-reaching connection with the community, from a founding board member now serving as Nevada County Supervisor to a graduate becoming a successful small-business owner on Mill Street in Grass Valley. From education to health care, Friendship Club graduates are an important part of the community and workforce.

The Safe Beginnings – Water Safety

Drowning Prevention Toolkit

The Safe Beginnings: Water Safety Toolkit focuses on drowning prevention. The purpose of the training is to provide information, tools, and resources to parents and caregivers of children aged 0 to 5 that maximize safety and prevent unintentional injuries. By the end of this training, the participant will be informed as to how to prevent unintentional water-related injuries in the home, around pools, and near open water.

Thank You

The Child Abuse Prevention Council of Western Nevada County would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our local community for their collaboration and partnership is hosting Pinwheels for Prevention gardens. In April, many of you may have noticed blue pinwheels spinning in the wind throughout Nevada County, these Pinwheels for Prevention gardens are to honor the children and youth in our community who have endured abuse and neglect while also bringing awareness to preventing child abuse and neglect in our community.

Again, we are grateful to our local community and look forward to collaborating again in 2026 with continuing Pinwheels for Prevention gardens throughout beautiful Nevada County.

While April is over and the pinwheels are put away, we encourage our community to continue child abuse and neglect prevention efforts year-round. It takes a village, and we are the village for the children and youth in our community.

Maternal Mental Health

May is Maternal Mental Health Month
This month, we shine a light on the emotional well-being of mothers and birthing people everywhere. Pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum bring incredible changes—not just physically, but mentally and emotionally, too.
1 in 5 women experience maternal mental health conditions like postpartum depression, anxiety, or birth-related PTSD—yet many suffer in silence.
Let’s break the stigma. Talk openly. Offer support. Listen with compassion.
Moms matter. Their mental health matters. Learn how we can support you in your journey. www.nevadacountyca.gov/3546
