Free Workshop Series: Parenting, Race, and Advocacy

Creating a Beloved Community: Parenting, Race, and Advocacy is a free workshop series sponsored by Family Hui in partnership with the Peace and Justice Institute at Valencia College.

Interactive sessions will be held on Zoom from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm PST.

August 6: Conversations on Bias

Bias doesn’t make you prejudiced, it makes you human. Becoming aware of our biases supports improved interpersonal relationships and increased respect in our communities. This workshop teaches the science of implicit bias, along with strategies and tools to skillfully navigate personal bias, understand fundamental attribution error, and avoid the trap of confirmation bias. Participants will be given opportunities in a safe setting to temporarily put aside their own perspectives in order to listen non-judgmentally to the experiences of others. With these new tools in hand, participants will learn to identify and minimize the negative impact of bias.

August 20: Family and Race

Across the nation, people of all backgrounds are experiencing a time in which discussions about race are at the forefront of their everyday lives. Many families avoid these discussions because they fear conversations about race and racism may lead to feelings of anger, guilt, discomfort, sadness, and at times disrespect. Moving beyond shame and blame, this workshop invites participants to explore methods to discuss these topics within the families and personal spheres of influence. Additionally, this workshop will discuss how racism contributes to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), and how to support a child in a way that promotes resilience and healing.
