Nevada County Cinderella Project Now Open

Bright Futures for Youth’s Nevada County Cinderella Project Now Open in Sammie’s Nifty Thrift Shop

Bright Futures for Youth’s Nevada County Cinderella Project – an organization that provides free and low-cost formal clothes for proms and special events to high school and middle school students – is now open in Sammie’s Nifty Thrift Shop at 535 E. Main St. in Grass Valley. The thrift store is operated by Sammie’s Friends, which operates the Nevada County Animal Shelter.

The move allows the Cinderella Project to expand hours – and the number of clothes available.

The Cinderella Project ensures that cost is not an issue for high school and middle school students to attend proms and other formal events. The boutique also offers low-cost formal clothes for customers of any age.

The clothes are donated by community members and small-business owners. It helps Bright Futures for Youth, the customers who enjoy the clothes and encourages the reuse of items. Learn More

Nevada County Public Health – Becoming Us

Becoming a new parent for the first time can be scary, but it doesn’t have to be!

On Feb. 22 and April 4, Nevada County Public Health is launching “Becoming Us” – a FREE four-session class to equip soon-to-be new parents with the knowledge they need to build a healthier relationship with their partner before the baby arrives.

“It’s not a birth plan, it’s a plan for after the baby comes. I think there are a lot of postpartum classes to prep mom individually. The unique thing about “Becoming Us” is that it addresses the relationship piece,” said Jessica Ferrer, Director of the county’s program known as Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health (MCHA).

After the class, couples will feel more connected and acquire the ability to negotiate differences and adjust expectations.

For more information or to sign up for “Becoming Us” contact Jessica Ferrer 530-265-1491 or Toni McCormick 775-721-1751.

February – Teen Dating Violence Awareness & Prevention Month

Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month

What Is Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month?

February is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month (TDVAM).  This is an issue that impacts everyone – not just teens – but their parents, teachers, friends and communities as well.  Together, we can raise the nation’s awareness about teen dating violence and promote safe, healthy relationships.

In his Teen Dating Violence Awareness & Prevention Month Proclamation President Obama called on all Americans “to stand against dating violence when we see it.”  At a time when an estimated 1 in 10 teens will experience dating violence we all must take this opportunity to amplify our efforts and shine a spotlight on this important issue.

What Is the Impact of Teen Dating Violence?

Nationwide, youth age 12 to 19 experience the highest rates of rape and sexual assault.  Studies show that approximately 10% of adolescents report being the victim of physical violence at the hands of an intimate partner during the previous year.  Girls are particularly vulnerable to experiencing violence in their relationships and are more likely to suffer long-term behavioral and health consequences, including suicide attempts, eating disorders, and drug use.

Adolescents in abusive relationships often carry these unhealthy patterns of violence into future relationships.  Indeed, children who are victimized or witness violence frequently bring this experience with them to the playground, the classroom, later into teen relationships and, ultimately, they can end up the victims and perpetrators of adult intimate partner violence.
